Cannabis Couriers and You

On Monday, Colorado State Lawmakers passed a measure to create a new type of cannabis licenses, one for a state-wide marijuana “transporter” or courier services.   Since passing the measure (currently awaiting the Governor’s signature), the bill has been making its way around the news circuits, especially those that are cannabis inclined.  Most of these articles have focused on the fact that this new licenses will allow for marijuana transporters to function within their own class of licensing.   Prior to this measure passing, there were 12 marijuana couriers in Colorado that functioned under the “vendor” category.   Being moved from vendor status to a transporter licenses is going to allow these couriers, along with any others starting up, to have special privileges.  But what does that mean for us?

Not a whole lot I’m afraid.   While the new measure will provide these couriers more abilities (we will get to these new powers soon) that will surly strengthen them and the local industry, for us consumer we’re going to have to read between the lines to find our benefits.   So if you were hoping this would mean door to door delivery for you (I know that’s something I personally cannot wait for), I’m afraid you’ll have to wait a bit longer.

This measure really is about strengthening the overall cannabis industry.   You see the biggest difference for these couriers now is that they are able “to provide logistics, distribution, and storage of marijuana and retail marijuana products.”   Storage is the major difference.  Before the measure, if couriers could not deliver their shipments, for example due to a snow storm, they had to drive back to the original location to release the products back to the vendor.  Now those holding a medical or retail marijuana licenses can store the shipments in their own facility until cleared for delivery.

For consumers, this does mean that our favorite strains or products will be more available in our favorite dispensaries.    Marijuana transporters ability to store marijuana in their own facility will make the shipping of products from vendor to dispensaries more effective and streamlined.  If nothing more, this measure shows that Colorado lawmakers consider our cannabis industry an important member of our overall economic strengthen as a state.  We will continue to see where the industry goes – hopefully soon, we’ll get the home delivery system many of us dream of!
