Weed Law 101, Part 2: Congressional Whiplash

January 8th, 2018

BREAKING: This just in. The city of Dallas, Texas – yes, Texas – voted yesterday to relax penalties for marijuana possession. This “cite and release” ordinance provides that anyone caught with possession of less than four ounces of pot will receive a ticket but will not be arrested. Baby steps in the land of some seriously whack-a-doo right wingers. Big congrats to my home town! Now back to our regularly scheduled program: Weed Law 101, Part 2: Congressional Whiplash. As we learned in Part 1, the federal government used racial fear and prejudice to first criminalize marijuana in 1937.... Read More

Why I Choose Hemp

August 26th, 2017

As a Cannabis Athlete and someone who believes health is wealth, I’m consistently looking at my nutritional intake and hemp seeds are one of the most nutritious seeds in the world. My friend and professional MMA fighter, Adam Meredith, also consumes hemp as one of his primary protein sources. They are a complete protein and contain all of the essential amino acids our bodies need to survive, including the 10 we must get from our diet. They are also packed full of vitamins, enzymes, and have a perfect ratio of essential fats omega 3 and 6. Hemp seeds are easily digestible and have no known allergens.... Read More

OK, since we love taking oil dabs we will take that word “OIL” and read it backwards for some reason. Wait, wait, wait that is not right. Ok I got it. Eating Your Weed for Health

June 13th, 2017

Recently, a show aired on Viceland called “Bong Appetite.” It is all about cooking with weed and all the amazing recipes weed can be incorporated into. In order for weed to have it’s psychoactive effects, the THC needs to be prepared certain ways, but I am curious about the non psychoactive benefits of eating raw cannabis and if ingesting raw cannabis has medicinal benefits as many other raw herbal medicines. According to an article by Delilah Butterfield in Feb, 2016, there are many nutrients in raw cannabis such as vitamins, essential oils and cannabinoid acids. The cannabinoid acids, THCa... Read More

Pains and Strains

June 13th, 2017

Evidence is pointing towards weed being great for easing chronic pain, however, it can be overwhelming selecting the most effective strain. My research this week began with the question in mind, “ What are the best strains for pain, and is there scientific evidence to make a determination?” As of today, there’s no official database on the thousands of new strains being created when it comes to cannabis, but scientist, Mowgli Holmes is currently undertaking the huge task of marijuana DNA sequencing. According to an article in Newsweek, Holmes has collected close to 2000 different specimens... Read More

Consuming Cannabis as an Athlete

June 11th, 2017

Before moving to Colorado, I only had access to smoking flower as a form of consumption, unless I wanted to attempt my own edibles. Now, I have the freedom to choose from all sorts of consumption methods, and I’ve had time to experiment with them all, in order to find out what works best for my body. As mentioned in Training with Cannabis, we all need to determine what works best for us, when fitting cannabis into our wellness routines. We talked last week about Pairing different Strains with different activities and goals. This week, we’ll dive into choosing the right method of cannabis consumption... Read More

THC and Paranoia

June 1st, 2017

THC and paranoia Paranoia. It is that term you often heard associated with smoking weed all your life, and perhaps have even experienced it. A study in 2014 set out to find out if THC is the cause of paranoia, as well as if THC could help identify the mechanisms that contribute to paranoia. 121 participants ages 21 to 50, with paranoid ideation received a placebo, THC, or THC preceded by a cognitive awareness explanation, in which participants were educated about possible effects prior to administration (Antley et al., 2014). Paranoia in this study was defined as the individual experiencing an... Read More

Stimulate the ECS for Healthy Gut!

May 24th, 2017

As most of us know, the Endocannabinoid system is the reason cannabis does its magic in our systems. It consists of fat Endocannabinoids and their receptors, cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1), cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), and the enzymes that regulate Endocannabinoid levels. There are multiple systems that the ECS engages with, but researchers are witnessing huge contributions within the gut. The ECS has a much greater impact on our daily lives than previously imagined. When cannabinoids such as cannabis, and others reach the cannabinoid receptors, their functioning changes and a study by Acharya et... Read More

Cannabis and Kratom: Natural Medicinal Plants Demonized by the DEA

May 16th, 2017

In August of 2016, the DEA made an announcement that they would be rescheduling the herb Kratom as a schedule I narcotic right along with Cannabis. I had discovered Kratom shortly before this happened, and could not understand why they would demonize this herb in the midst of an opioid epidemic where people are dying from pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by Doctors. Many people use Kratom to stay off deadly prescription medicines, but there are many who use it for it’s many health properties. Kratom and Cannabis are completely different substances, but share many similarities. Kratom is actually... Read More
